Just over four years ago, my world crumbled. In one last breath, with my sister and I at her side, my mom died. She was my world. She didn’t just suddenly pass. She had suffered a gut wrenching 2 year fight with colon cancer and I watched every second of it. It wasn’t pretty on any level. It wasn’t long ago that I found it really difficult to speak to strangers. I was shy. I had zero self esteem and there was no way that I thought I could offer anyone anything.
It wasn’t until after I met my husband that I began to feel like I had enough good inside of me to share with other people. So I began reaching out to others. In small ways at first. I would hold open doors and say hello to people. I would smile at someone I passed in a store. It wasn’t much but it was enough that I started noticing how good doing those things made ME feel. It happens to all of us from time to time. We find ourselves just completely unenthused about what we know we should be doing. We begin feeling like a rat in a maze with no cheese…or exit. Ruts make us begin to question ourselves. They distract us from our goal. Whether it is changing your diet, exercising or simply trying to begin a new positive habit, ruts happen. While sitting at my desk this morning, I was faced with the task of planning out my classes and workshops for the upcoming weeks, months and yes, even the year. That is a rather big task. I want to be able to challenge my students on both a physical as well as an emotional level.
