I know that a mile, when we are discussing fitness, marks many things. It is different for each person. 1 mile for me, when I first began running a single mile was my first goal. The first milestone that for me, marked that I had made progress. Then that mile became my “you’re almost home” mark. Then I used the mile for fartleks and speed training. Then…after I pulled ligaments in my foot, the mile was my “this is resting” distance. When I amped up my yoga teacher training, I stopped running all together because I was terrified of getting injured and not being able to finish teacher training. As a running coach, people ask me ALL THE TIME why they get a cramp in their side while running. Those things are SO annoying when you are trying to run, aren’t they? They pull you right out of that zone you are in and make you feel like your lungs are going to explode! But reality is, they are pretty harmless.
The side cramp is actually a muscle spasm of the diaphragm, which is instrumental in breathing. Since your diaphram is a muscle it can also get fatigued. The cramp affects the diaphragm muscle, the supporting ligaments, tendons and surrounding connective tissue. That’s why it hurts so damn bad sometimes. [Read more…]
I keep seeing posts all over social media about shakes, powders, pills and liquids that will improve your health and people are eating it up – quite literally. I am sick of it. It has been all that I can do to keep from lashing out at the claimants. The only thing that has kept me in check about blowing my top is that these posts are coming from people that I know. People whom I don’t want to upset or offend but I have to say SOMETHING because these claims of health are just 100% false. Do any of you even have a clue what you are trying to sell? Have you looked at the labels of these products before you brag about their effectiveness to your friends and family or are you simply in it for the cash? [Read more…]
